PROVO In an emotional game between neighboring schools, Timpview mounted a last-minute comeback and then scored the game-winning goal in overtime to beat Orem 4-3 in boys prep soccer Friday.
After Kevin Mitchell's penalty kick gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the 76th minute, Timpview scored twice in extra minutes before Rob Brinton made the golden goal in the 94th minute for the Thunderbirds.
"I knew Orem was going to be strong," Timpview coach Mike Anderson said. "They outplayed us the whole first half. We were down 3-1, but we took advantage of the chances we had."
Despite it being a nonregion game, there was a playoff-like atmosphere on the field, and the intense play showed on both sides. The referee gave four yellow cards, and a lot of talking and pushing occurred between the teams.
The Tigers collapsed after taking the two-goal lead and couldn't recover in overtime.
"We just lapsed," Orem coach Reed Paulson said. "We came in a little bit flat defensively."
Brett Shumway came from his midfield position to lead the T-Birds with two goals, including the shot that sent the game into overtime.
The tying goal came on Timpview's final attack after a well-executed pass by Jon Siddoway. Shumway took the pass and just squeezed the ball inside the post. Seconds earlier, Siddoway had scored on a penalty kick to cut the Tiger lead to one.
"We had been trying to go to our forwards the whole time, and they were really well-defended," Anderson said. "They kept on battling. We got one goal, and we kept on going."
Orem took another huge blow in the first overtime when goalkeeper Brad Howard suffered a broken foot making a save. The season-ending injury came when Howard collided with Shumway after sliding to block an open shot.
Cameron Clark, who had started the first half in goal for Orem, replaced Howard but couldn't make a save on Brinton's winning shot on an assist from Salomon Jaar.
Orem scored first in the 26th minute on a penalty kick by Kai Kamoe. The Tigers made the lead 2-0 and appeared to have the game in hand in the 44th minute when Diego Cueva scored a breakaway goal on an assist from Jason Bodine.
Shumway scored Timpview's first goal, in the 70th minute.
"Timpview's a tough team," Paulson said. "We had them, and we let it slip through our fingers."
