Envirocare of Utah had lobbied for consideration of a measure allowing the low-level radioactive waste disposal company to expand operations onto land it owns adjacent to its present facilities in Tooele County. But Huntsman and GOP leaders decided not to put that item on the call. Envirocare wants to be able to handle and upload waste material in that area. "We're very disappointed," Tim Barney, Envirocare senior vice president, said Thursday. "We felt what we were requesting was very reasonable, and was business-friendly."

But Jason Groenewold, director of the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah and a long-time critic of Envirocare, was pleased. "The governor was wise to let this go through the proper process rather than fast-track Envirocare's request to double in size," he said. Mike Mower, Huntsman's legislative liaison, said the governor was asked to consider some 30 to 40 items for the special session. The 15 items he agreed to send to lawmakers, Mower said, were still a lot. "It's a really special session," Mower joked.
