• For those planting in higher mountain valleys, the choice of cherries is more limited. The best stone-fruit choice for colder areas is the flowering chokecherry. Besides being cold hardy, it has the advantage of red to purplish foliage in summer. Look for "Canada Red" or "Shubert" as selected cultivars.

• Tooele Spring Garden Expo, hosted by the Tooele County Master Gardeners, will take place Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Shelly Zollinger, Temple Square gardener and co-author of "Temple Square Gardening," will discuss landscaping ideas. In addition, master gardeners will teach workshops on a variety of topics. A fee of $5 will cover the cost of handout materials. For more information, call 435-843-2350.

• Spring Celebration Festival is scheduled April 23, 9 a.m.—2 p.m. This day only, classes will be at the Botanical Center Greenhouse,150 E. Sego Lily Drive (725 S. Frontage Road). Classes, which are $5 per session, will cover a wide variety of topics. Pre-registration is requested at 451-3403.

• The Utah Orchid Society will hold a show and sale May 7, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and May 8, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., at Red Butte Garden. Regular garden admission applies.
