Utah has not experienced a recent significant jump in the rate of rapes and sexual assaults, as reported in Tuesday's Deseret Morning News.
An article in Tuesday's Morning News attributed a 93 percent jump in the rate of rape cases to the wrong time period. According to a study by the Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, the jump actually took place between 1988 and 1991. From 2000-03, Utah's rape rate decreased by 1.8 percent.
The study's author, Mike Haddon, said the 93 percent rise was cited in the report to illustrate the increase in rape reports because of the opening of several rape crisis centers. Haddon said Utah's rape rate has remained consistently higher than the national rate since 1991, placing it 14th in the nation.
