It is appropriate for Christians of all denominations to reflect on the extraordinary impact of Pope John Paul II on the world. He was a man of profound gifts. But more than that, he understood the power of Christianity's message of hope to transform this world.
He displayed moral courage. He never adopted prudent silence in a world he perceived to be smothering itself in a culture of death. He stepped forward to condemn social inequity, the horror of war, the tragedy of abortion. His call to adopt a culture of life allowed him to become a spokesman for the oppressed and a catalyst for change.
He was thoroughly committed to the belief that moral virtue is universal. For him, through God, we are all connected to one another.
We often speak of greatness. We seldom witness it. By his own high standards, Pope John Paul II was a great man.
