UPN will inflict Spears on us

Something tells me NBC is still kicking itself over letting the show go to CBS for nine very successful seasons.

In large part, the show is a victim of economics. TV shows cost more each year they're on. And, while "JAG" is still doing good numbers on Friday nights, the ratings don't justify the costs of the series.

We already knew that if the show returned for an 11th season, star David James Elliott wasn't coming back — not because he quit, but because the show couldn't afford him.

The really good news is that, what with this much notice, producers will create a final episode for the series (scheduled to air Friday, April 29) that will be a proper ending — one that we're promised will resolve the relationship between Harm (Elliott) and Mac (Catherine Bell).

"The unmistakable chemistry between them has been held at bay for professional reasons," the network said in announcing the finale, "but in the final episode, due to a bombshell dropped by General Cresswell, they are forced to face those feelings once and for all."
