Not only was the idea cheap but it allowed UTA to explore 16 different designs. The 50 students in Smith's class separated into groups of four, created a model and were judged on their design's presentation and practicality.

Three groups were selected as finalists, each winning a $500 scholarship and a chance to have their model built when BRT gets on track within the next five to 10 years.

Johnson says the experience has exceeded his expectations. Students say they have gained real-world experience.

Their models will likely be used in Utah, Davis, Weber and Salt Lake counties, where preliminary studies of BRT and other transit modes are nearing completion.

"For most of us here, this is the furthest we've even gone with a design," said Adam Jensen. "It's a new learning experience. Usually you just work in the abstract state as an undergrad."

Added Nick Lorenzo: "It's the first time we've ever come into a professional setting and dealt with a real client. It's an opportunity only 12 people are getting."

While presenting before the UTA board of trustees, Lorenzo and other members of their group described concepts behind their designs. They answered questions about security, cost, purpose and functionality: Could their models withstand weather and vandalism? Is the design iconic?

Krystal Koltz said the experience was encouraging. "It seemed like they were really receptive," she said.

Bingham agreed. While the group was peppered with questions, most felt prepared.

They knew their designs and had studied the needs of their client.

Whether they were prepared for a public presentation was another question. "Never was UTA quantified in terms of people," said Bingham, laughing. It was "a little lesson in public speaking."

A bus stop created by a group of U. students would serve bus rapid transit if the system goes into use.
