More than a decade ago, Stubbs saw a need for day care, so she started a center in an on-campus home. She's since sought grants and other funding sources and continues to direct the day care.

"If we teach people to know where opportunities are, we can make them rich," she said.

• Appeals Court Judge William Thorne Jr., who said he was raised in a culture that "taught you to do what you can. . . . You never know whose life you can touch and what ripples will churn forward." Thorne is a nationally recognized figure in Native American law and advocacy. His presentations frequently focus on educating service providers on the Indian Child Welfare Act.

• Your Community Connection of Ogden/Northern Utah, a nonprofit in its 60th year, which works to save and change lives through three program centers and a community outreach center. In 2004, 423 women and children were provided shelter at its Domestic Violence Victim Assistance Center, and 24 homeless families were provided with transitional housing.
