Businesses in Weber County and Tooele City will begin imposing a sales tax today to fund parks and recreation.
According to a statement released by the Utah State Tax Commission, the 1993 Utah Legislature passed a bill allowing county legislative bodies an option to impose a local sales and use tax of 1/10 of 1 percent to fund recreational and cultural facilities and parks, subject to approval by voters. The voters of Tooele City and Weber County approved the imposition of this tax for transactions occurring on or after April 1.
Beginning today, vendors in Tooele and Weber County must collect the additional 1/10 of 1 percent sales tax on all taxable transactions. This 1/10 of 1 percent tax is in addition to any other applicable sales and use taxes. The increased tax rate will be reflected on sales tax returns beginning with the April monthly period (for monthly filers), the April-June quarterly period (for quarterly filers) and the January-December annual period (for annual filers).
The additional 1/10 of 1 percent brings the total combined retail sales tax rate in both areas to 6.60 percent effective today April 1.
