Utah maintains No. 1 ranking

For the eighth time in a dozen regular-season NCAA women's gymnastics rankings, the University of Utah is the No. 1 team in the nation. It goes into the postseason with the top Regional Qualifying Score, an average of six select meets with the high thrown out.

Utah's 197.725 road score at Provo Saturday, in a win over BYU (196.60), bumped the Utes' final RQS up .3 point to 197.320 and is .23 point higher than two-time defending NCAA champion UCLA, which moved ahead of Louisiana State into the No. 2 spot this week. Utah led LSU by .1 point in the rankings last week.

BYU's season-best score Saturday allowed it to move up one place in the rankings to 13th, while Utah State remained 16th after winning its first Western Gymnastics Conference championship Friday. Southern Utah, ranked 17th last week, fell to 22nd on the final ratings.

Ute freshman Ashley Postell dropped from third to a tie for fourth in all-around rankings but is backed by teammates Nicolle Ford and Annabeth Eberle in Nos. 6 and 7. Postell retained her No. 1 ranking on beam, as did the Ute team, which also moved from fourth to second on bars and from seventh to second on vault.

Ford is ranked fifth on beam, and BYU's Dayna Smart moved into a tie for ninth. Ute Rachel Tidd is third on bars.

BYU's best event ranking is 10th on beam, with USU 17th. SUU's top event rating is 22nd on floor exercise.

BYU and SUU are among six teams at the April 9 NCAA North Central Regional at Utah, and USU goes to the Central Regional at Alabama the same night.
