Stockton's statue ready for unveiling

The statue honoring retired Jazz point guard John Stockton will be unveiled Wednesday, the Jazz announced.

A special ceremony is planned for 4:30 p.m. prior to the Jazz's game against Denver, and Stockton will be in attendance along with his family, Jazz owner Larry H. Miller and Murray-born sculptor Brian Challis.

The sculpture — standing eight feet tall and weighing more than 800 pounds — will have a permanent place on the Delta Center's south side.

It is one in a series by Challis commissioned by Miller in 2003, along with several smaller-size replicas of the original. A Challis statue of retired Jazz power forward Karl Malone will join Stockton's sometime next year, the team said.

Stockton retired after the 2002-03 NBA season after spending his entire 19-year career with Utah. He and his family reside now in Spokane, Wash.
