A bruised foot keeps Jeter out of N.Y. lineup
Rivera throws 63 pitches in bullpen; Mets acquire Ishii
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter missed Sunday's game against Tampa Bay with a bruised left foot and will be out for the next few days.
Jeter got hurt when he fouled a ball of his foot Saturday. He was sore when he arrived for treatment Sunday and was sent to the hospital for X-rays, which were negative.
"The good news is the X-ray didn't show anything," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "I think it's a couple days."
Torre didn't rule out Jeter returning Tuesday.
"For him to say it's sore, it's sore," Torre said.
Center fielder Bernie Williams also missed the game after straining his upper back during batting practice Sunday. Williams, through a team spokesman, said he felt "discomfort" while swinging right-handed and decided to shut it down to prevent additional problems.
"Hopefully it's nothing serious," Torre said. "He'll get treatment. That's all that's planned right now. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what it feels like."
Meanwhile, closer Mariano Rivera and reliever Paul Quantrill had bullpen sessions at Legends Field in Tampa and could pitch Tuesday. Rivera has been sidelined since Monday with mild bursitis in his right elbow. Quantrill has been out since pitching last weekend with sore ribs.
Rivera threw 63 pitches off a bullpen mound after 40 warm-up tosses.
"The best thing was, I didn't feel anything," Rivera said. "That's the good part. It was a great day. I had no doubt I was going to be fine. I had no worries about it."
A decision on when Rivera will pitch should be made Monday. Quantrill reported no problems after his throwing session.
METS ACQUIRE ISHII: At Vero Beach, Fla., the New York Mets plugged a hole in their starting rotation Sunday, acquiring left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii from the Los Angeles Dodgers for catcher Jason Phillips.
The Mets traded for Ishii to fill the void created when they lost Steve Trachsel to a back injury this spring. Trachsel, who made 33 starts for New York last season, had surgery Saturday to repair a herniated disc and will miss at least three to six months.
