Two cats have been euthanized, and at least one dog was put on an IV following the seizure of dozens of animals Wednesday from an illegal shelter.
A total of 35 cats, 26 dogs, three birds and two rabbits were taken by officials from a warehouse near 2600 South and 1000 West.
Animal control officers were forced to euthanize two cats Wednesday night. Animal Control officer Jason Rasmussen said one of the cats was infested with mites. Also, a Dachshund suffering from dehydration was put on an IV, said South Salt Lake Police Capt. Chris Snyder.
Nearly all of the animals suffered from some sort of dehydration or malnourishment, Rasmussen said.
A veterinarian from American Paws Mobile Vet Clinic is donating her time and services to examine all the animals. Snyder said a full report on all the seized animals was expected by today.
Rasmussen said hundreds of citizens had made much needed donations of food and water since the plight of the animals was reported by the media. Now the shelters seek monetary donations to buy medications for the animals.
