TREVOR HIGLEY, Fremont: Several players came up big for Fremont during last week's state championship run, but this senior's 3-pointers in the third quarter ofthe title game were critical.
"If we don't have them, (West Jordan's) lead is probably eight points," said Fremont coach Bernie Graziano. "He hit some big 3s."
Higley scored 14 points in the championship game and also grabbed six rebounds. He finished the season with a 10.8 scoring average, second on the team.
"He has been a steady force for us," said Graziano. "He really improved on his rebounding for us."
Higley, who maintains a 3.7 GPA, was an all-state football player and is also the starting goalie on the soccer team.
KRIS HYMAS, Bingham: In the Miner basketball program there is an honor greater than scoring points, grabbing steals or earning rebounds. It's being voted team captain by your teammates.
"Kris was voted team captain by her peers two years in a row," said coach Rand Rasmussen. "It doesn't get any bigger than that in our program."
The senior has the basketball skills to go with her interpersonal skills as she leads the team in scoring with 11 points per game. Her play helped the Miners to a region title and a second-place finish in the 5A state tournament.
"She's our top offensive player," Rasmussen said. She leads by example most of the time, but can rally her teammates when she sees the need. "She's very fun-loving and a pleasure to be around. She's good at breaking up the tension ... She talks when she thinks it's time to say something."
