On Thursday, House members authorized a task force to study the causes of divorce.

Rep. Peggy Wallace, R-West Jordan, said she hopes to find a better way to handle, and hopefully prevent, divorce in Utah. Originally the bill was drafted to prohibit divorce without cause for couples who had been married longer than 10 years or had children, but she sacrificed it in favor of studying the overall problem during the next year.

"In a divorce situation, children lose that sense of safety," Wallace said. "They trust marriage, and they trust their parents, even if the parents are fighting. The big concern is helping those children."
