Springville looks at alcohol rules

SPRINGVILLE — Concerned over whether the city's alcohol license is too strict, the City Council tonight will look at options for reducing the sting.

The council recently ruled against V's Quik Stop's bid to renew its beer license after the owner was caught selling to a minor. The store lost its license for two years.

Owner Venita Henderson complained that the ordinance was unfair for small businesses, which have a greater risk of getting caught because owners and managers have to work the counter more than in larger stores. Owners and managers will lose their license on the first offense, while citations to employees allow three violations before the store loses its license.

The council will look at a variety of options over concerns that small businesses are unfairly impacted, City Attorney Troy Fitzgerald said.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 50 S. Main.
