Will Malone wear new or old Jazz logo in statue?

Monument to the Mailman will be alongside Stockton

Hair? Or bald?

Good question, says Jazz owner Larry Miller.

Jazz note? Or mountains?

Miller doesn't know yet.

How many people will shell out some $10,000 for a half-size copy or perhaps $1,200 to $1,500 for smaller replicas? Several have already inquired.

Those are among many questions Miller says he must research for the statue of the newly retired Karl Malone that will grace the southeast portion of the outdoor Delta Center plaza about a year from now.

Miller thought Malone would want the statue to be wearing the mountain-logo second-generation Utah Jazz uniform because Malone had seemed to embrace the 1996-97 logo change more readily than did his forever partner, John Stockton.

But then Malone mentioned during his retirement press conference Sunday afternoon at the Delta Center that he wanted to enter the NBA Hall of Fame — should he be voted in — as a Jazzman in the old Jazz-note, green-purple-and-gold logo and uniform style.

Malone was emphatic about that.

So Miller mentally added another question to those he'll have to ask Malone: Which jersey will he wear in bronze?

Miller said he was surprised at Stockton's answer to the same question. Stockton was always steadfast in preferring the old Jazz note until it came time to pick what he would wear on the statue. He chose the mountain-logo jersey, telling Miller the Jazz had their most success (two NBA Finals appearances. '96-97, '97-98) in that uniform.

The statue of Stockton passing a ball in the direction of the planned Malone statue will be unveiled in just a few weeks, Miller said, adding Stockton is expected to be in Salt Lake City for the occasion and is "pretty excited" about it. The facial features on the Stockton statue were just reworked by artist Brian Challis.

Stockton will stand sentinel waiting for Malone sometime in early or mid-March. Miller said the date is tentatively set for March 15, plus or minus five days, depending on the weather and a few other concerns.

Malone's statue will arrive about a year later.

Then, together but apart, they will share a 40-foot circle on the plaza, 1 1/2 times life-size, on pedestals separated about 20 feet.
