The Farmington Station Park development is being promoted as a transit-oriented development (TOD) centered around the Utah Transit Authority's commuter rail line.
TODs are a relatively new concept and focus on a return to "old-world," walkable communities. Most of the Davis and Weber County cities with a commuter rail stop are planning some sort of TOD development, with various shops and residential areas within walkable distance of the commuter rail site.
"It's an opportunity," explained Steve Meyer, manager of commuter rail construction for UTA. "Whenever you have something that's going to draw someone to an area, how can you take advantage of that?"
UTA is currently waiting for federal approval of an environmental study of the commuter rail line. Construction on some portions could begin as early as March, with completion of the project scheduled for 2007.
Retailers and a theater chain have already expressed interest in the Station Park development site. Within the next 60 days, specific stores should be announced.
