Alpine's '5 Browns' releasing DVD

Five is a magic number for Keith and Lisa Brown of Alpine. All five of their offspring attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York simultaneously for five consecutive years.

The sibling piano quintet — known as the 5 Browns — took some time off from their busy schedules to be interviewed via conference call. Desirae, 25, and Deondra, 24, were patched in from Salt Lake City, while the other three — Gregory, 22, Melody, 20, and Ryan, 19 — called from their apartment in New York City.

Attending Juilliard together was kind of like being at home away from home, they said. "It was fun seeing your brothers and sisters there," said Desirae. "We walk down the halls and say 'Hi.' It was like something natural for us."

"It was fun to be able to hook up for lunch," said Deondra, "and see what was going on with each other's studies."

Juilliard is just one of many rewards for the five, who have all sorts of musical influences. Everything from Norah Jones, and jazz and hip-hop, pop and Beethoven, have shaped these young musicians. "The only music we really don't like is country music," Ryan said with a laugh. "But it's hard to pinpoint all of our musical influences because there are so many."

While influences may run the gamut, all five have a great idea of what they are trying to do as a performing group. Much like Lang Lang and the Ahn Trio, the 5 Browns are trying to preserve the future of classical music. "We want to help younger people feel comfortable with classical music," said Melody. "When we choose works to play, we find shorter works to perform."

"There is something standoffish about a classical music concert," said Desirae. "We want to make the music more accessible without losing the integrity of the works."

To give the public a taste of what the quintet is all about, the 5 Browns are releasing their self-titled CD/DVD on Tuesday. That night the group will appear on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno (10:35 p.m., Ch. 5). Then on Friday they will perform on ABC's "Good Morning America" (7-9 a.m., Ch. 4).

The release, which will be presented on a two-sided CD/DVD format on the RCA Red Seal label, will include 11 of the Browns' favorite works in music form, as well as videos of performances and interviews.
