Major road work will soon hit Sandy streets as the Utah Department of Transportation moves forward with several projects to revamp and restructure city roads.
A proposed interchange at 11400 South and I-15 is foremost among the department's proposals, garnering the attention of Sandy residents since the fall. After receiving about 200 comments on the project from citizens, UDOT is now moving forward to respond to resident input and will submit the proposal to the federal highway administration this month.
Another 30-day public comment period will follow the federal agency's review with a final decision expected by mid-March. In addition to constructing a new interchange, the project will widen 11400 South west to Bangerter Highway.
At the same time, UDOT is also plowing ahead with plans for a revitalized State Street. UDOT team members will present plans for the new alignment, provide traffic information and discuss design options at a public hearing Feb. 16, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Sandy City Hall.
UDOT is working with Sandy City to make improvements to State Street from 9000 South to 10600 South to accommodate traffic projections. Construction is expected to begin summer 2006.
Proposed upgrades include:
Reconstructing asphalt
Installing curb, gutter and sidewalks
Relocating driveways for better access
Installing pedestrian ramps at intersections
Reconstructing drainage
Widening major intersections
UDOT is also in the final design stages for the 700 East widening and reconstruction project between 9400 South and 10010 South.
UDOT officials are meeting with property owners along the corridor to determine how the project will impact their property.
The proposed improvements will include widening the road to two lanes in each direction with a center lane, 10-foot shoulders for one-way bike lanes and buses, park strips and 6-foot sidewalks on both sides of the road, signal improvements and street lighting.
A 145-foot bridge over Dry Creek will also be included in the project, which will allow 700 East traffic across Dry Creek and Dimple Dell Park.
