AM radio is still far from fading in the Salt Lake-area market — two of the top four stations are on the AM dial.

KSL "AM-1160" continues to lead the Arbitron ratings. For fall 2004, age 12-plus listeners, KSL has a 9.0 percent audience share, ahead of sister station KSFI "FM-100" at 8.1.

That's the same order the two stations held at the end of last October, though their respective shares then were only 7.2 and 6.6 percent, respectively. Apparently, this says that Utahns love news/information and also soft music.

After these top two stations, the audience shares almost drop in half, and then bunch up together in sardine fashion. (It's also surprising now that to be in the top 10 of this general audience only requires a 3.2 percent audience share as the field gets more even.)

In addition, KNRS, another AM station at 570 on the dial, has moved up to a tie for third-place with KRSP — for perhaps the first time ever in the top three. KNRS was fourth last October and moving ahead of music stations. This means "Family Values Radio" is also a high priority for Salt Lake-area radio listeners, as this station has 4.8 percent of the market (the station features Bob Lonsberry , Don Schafer, Dr. Laura and others).

It isn't that KNRS improved; it remained consistent, while KUBL dropped and KRSP increased its audience.

Here are the top radio stations:

1. KSL-AM, news/talk (9.0); 2. KSFI "FM-100" (8.1); 3. (tie) KNRS-AM, talk radio, and KRSP "Arrow 103.5" (4.8); 5. (tie) KOSY, "Lite Rock" and KXRK, "X-96" (4.2); 7. KUBL "K-Bull" (4.1); 8. KSOP, "The Cowboy" (3.9); 9. KODJ, oldies (3.7); 10. KQMB "Star 102" (3.2).

11. (tie) KBER, rock, and KUUU/KTCE/KRAR "U-92" (3.1); 13. KZHT, hit music, (2.8); 14. KDUT, Mexican. (2.4); 15. (tie) KBEE "B-98.7" and KENZ "The End" (2.3); 17. KHTB "The Blaze" (2.1); 18. (tie) KBZN "The Breeze" and KJMY "My 99.5" (1.7); 19. KPQP "Pop FM" (1.6); 20. (tie) KEGA "The Eagle" and KZNS/KOVO "The Zone" (1.5).

22. (tie) KALL-AM, "Hot Ticket 70"; KDYL-AM, nostalgic, KRRD, Spanish and KUDD/KUDE, "Power 107.9" (1.3); 26. KXRV "The River" (1.0); 27. KJQN, "Jack FM" (0.9); 28. KFNZ-AM "K-Fan" (0.8); 29. (tie) KKAT, classic county (0.5), KLO-AM , news/talk and KVFX, "VFX" (0.5).

KSOP "FM-104.3" has launched a new event, "My Big Fat Utah Valentine's Wedding." The station wants to know you and your lover's background, and why you should be picked to win a legal wedding, a wedding dinner for up to 40 people, $500 in cash and an ACM Awards trip. Entries are due Feb. 8 and winners will be announced Feb. 10.
