SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) Five finalists will be announced on Friday out of more than 1,000 designs for the memorial to United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001, and crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
A jury comprised partly of family members of the 40 passengers and crew who died on the flight whittled the field down to 30 potential finalists, then the final five on Wednesday.
A second jury will announce a winning design by Sept. 11, the fourth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Two weeks later, the design must be submitted to Congress and the Interior Department, which will oversee the development.
The finalists will each receive a $25,000 honorarium to develop their ideas, which are to be submitted June 15.
