Will the Utah Legislature ever fund a building proposal from the Utah College of Applied Technology
(UCAT)? A few years ago the Legislature combined the regional Applied Technology Centers into UCAT and made it a division within higher education. Since then, a new UCAT building has never been funded.
This year, with state revenues up and the oil and gas exploration surging, the time would be ideal. As energy development increases, the state coffers benefit through severance taxes, as well as income and property taxes. The Rocky Mountain region has a critical shortage of trained workers. That is what the Vernal building will provide.
I encourage our legislators to support a new UCAT building in Vernal.
