Jazz waive Campbell, put McLeod on IL

With four, they were overcrowded at the point. Now, they're down to two.

On the same day they waived, as expected, veteran center Elden Campbell before he ever played a game for them, the Jazz on Wednesday placed starting point guard Keith McLeod on the injured list.

McLeod has a strained right hamstring, sustained when he reached back for an errant pass in the closing seconds of Sunday's loss at Seattle.

After going on the injured list, McLeod must sit out at least five games — meaning his earliest return date is a Feb. 7 Delta Center game against New York.

With Friday's trade of former starter Carlos Arroyo to Detroit for Campbell and a draft pick, that leaves usual backup Raul Lopez and veteran combo guard Howard Eisley as the only points still on the Jazz's active roster.

Lopez opened Wednesday night's win over Seattle, marking his sixth start of the season, and Eisley backed him up.

The Jazz on Wednesday also activated big man Jarron Collins, who had been on the injured list for the past 22 games — since Dec. 12 — with a sprained medial collateral knee ligament.

Later they agreed to a discounted contract-buyout agreement with Campbell, acquired along with a lottery-protected 2006 first-round draft selection.

Jazz basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor confirmed a financial concession was received from Campbell, but he would not comment on details of the agreement.

It's believed, however, that if Campbell clears waivers after 48 hours and subsequently joins another team — re-signing with Detroit or signing with New Jersey are apparent possibilities — the Jazz will save about $200,000 from the $2 million or so still owed on his $4.4 million contract for this season.

Campbell, though, will make money beyond the $4.4 million if he indeed signs elsewhere.

The Jazz now have one spot free on their 12-man active roster.

Options for filling it include waiting to activate rookie Kirk Snyder when he is eligible to come off the injured list Tuesday, or signing a third point guard to a 10-day contract.

Snyder was stashed on the injured list with a supposed knee injury so All-Star forward Andrei Kirilenko could be activated prior to Saturday's game vs. Cleveland.
