Salt Lake lawmaker quits to head police board

Rep. Ty McCartney, D-Salt Lake, is resigning his post to become the Salt Lake City's Police Civilian Review Board administrator.

In his new position, McCartney will oversee the work of the board, provide staff assistance, compile quarterly reports, and research alleged incidents of police misconduct. His prior work experience includes 13 years in law enforcement, and he most recently worked as a case manager in the Salt Lake County criminal justice system.

McCartney, who just started his third term in office, will continue to serve in the Legislature until a replacement is sworn into office. Democratic delegates from his district will meet Jan. 26 to choose that replacement.

Although many legislators take a leave of absence from their full-time jobs during the session, McCartney said that the workload in his new position does not give him time to also work as a legislator.
