K-Talk radio host Xavier Hermosillo said Haro's decision was disappointing, but not surprising, considering her lack of experience.
"She's a nice individual, and is well-liked in the community," he said. "Many people are concerned about her qualifications for such a high-level position. She should have at least tried to prove herself."
He noted much of Haro's experience had been as a secretary in the state Department of Public Safety and her lack of a college degree was troubling. Haro was appointed to the State Olympic Office in 2000, and worked as a communications specialist for the University of Utah. She will remain at her current post of regional vice president for Zions Bank.
Rep. Sheryl Allen, R-Bountiful, said she's talked with Haro and has "always been very impressed."
"It's sad, frankly, because of the uncertainty that department's been through."
Ogden Deputy Mayor Joe Reyna, who is replacing Haro as Republican co-chairman of the Utah Hispanic Legislative Task Force, said he understands that Haro "is a very busy woman. Her family was a big issue."
Luz Robles, Democratic co-chairwoman of the Hispanic Legislative Task Force, agreed with Reyna.
"I personally think she would have done a great job," Robles said. "It's a loss for our community in terms of having someone who really represents our community."
