The public hearing on the Legacy Freeway SEIS, held in Davis County was correct in its format, yet it could not hide several deceptions in the content of the Legacy plan. It was unfortunate that the exhibit of Legacy drawings did not include parallel drawings of alternative options suggested as a "Smart Growth Alternative." The map of the projected Legacy Parkway shows a connection at its South terminus with I-215 running South and West AROUND Salt Lake City. This connection will not accommodate commuters to Salt Lake City, but rather the mega trucks that now impact traffic and create hazards on I-15. Yet Legacy is described as a parkway. That is a term normally reserved for roads with restricted truck usage.
Disguising a truck highway with an edging of a hiker and biker pathway is neither honest nor conducive to the health of outdoor folks, not to mention wildlife.
Those of us who support a Smart Growth Alternative to Legacy are not aiming to impede progress, but rather to find solutions that will serve the transport as well as our communities for the long term.
