Ellertson leaves Lindon post with mixed emotions
Ellertson said he's looking forward to working for residents of the whole county, but it was hard to say goodbye.
"I've had a great opportunity to serve in this city," Ellertson told the council as the meeting began. He was a bit choked up as he spoke about his departure. "Some of you may be aware that I'll be resigning this evening . . . I'll get through it. We'll move on, because I don't want to break down and cry."
Ellertson said he's been happy in his post and hopes he's done some good.
"I've had a great experience here, and I've thoroughly enjoyed working here with the city, with the residents and everyone involved," he said. "It's with emotion, of course (that I leave), but I feel as though we've done a decent job, thanks to staff and council keeping me out of trouble."
The council will take applications from Lindon residents to fill the vacant mayoral post until 5 p.m. on Jan. 21. Applicants will be interviewed by the council, and it's anticipated that a new mayor will be appointed Feb. 1.
"It could (be one of the council members)," Ellertson said. "I don't know where their interests are. We've got some good council members, and it could come from the community."
Ellertson said no matter who the new mayor is, he or she must have certain qualities to succeed.
"Someone who can come in and listen and work with people that's what it takes, in my opinion, to be successful," he said.
Ellertson said though he can think of several people in the community who could fill the role, he's not making any endorsements.
"I know some people who could step in and do it, if need be, and I'll be encouraging them to make sure they're there," he said. "But I'm not endorsing or pushing any particular person at this point in time."
If a council member does apply for the post, he or she would sit out the selection process.
Ellertson said the first challenge for the new mayor will be learning and becoming part of the city processes, and getting out into the community.
