Not all unnatural deaths are classified as homicides with criminal intent. The following police-involved shootings or incidents that were ruled self-defense, accidents, negligence or recklessness were not counted in the Deseret Morning News' homicide statistics:

1. ROY, Jan. 4 — Robert Apodaca, 30, died following a robbery, chase and shootout with police. Apodaca shot Roy police officer Don Ponton in the leg during the exchange of gunfire. Although one of Ponton's return shots hit Apodaca, it was later ruled that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police only found out about the death through community gossip. Gould, 40, was arrested for investigation of manslaughter a few days later.
