If you go to Honduras

GETTING THERE: Taca offers direct flights to and from Miami one day a week. Major airlines such as American and Continental connect daily to Roatan via local Honduran airlines from the mainland cities of San Pedro Sula or La Ceiba.

GETTING AROUND: Taxis are the most common way for tourists to travel the island. There are a number of major car rental agencies near the airport in Coxen Hole. My family and I rented a car for one day, which was enough to see the length of the island.

WHERE TO STAY: Roatan has a wide range of accommodations, from inexpensive to luxury hotels. For a complete listing, visit www.roatanonline.com. We rented a three-bedroom beachfront house in West Bay Beach called Casa Carnival. It rents for between $1,250 and $1,650 a week, depending on the season. Contact owners Lisa or Brent Grams at (913) 385-7755 or visit www.bayislandsroatan.com

WHAT TO DO: Diving and fishing excursions are easy to arrange through your hotel or from waterfront shops. Bananarama Resort (www.bananaramadive.com, P.O. Box 134, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras; phone 011-504-992-9679) offers scuba lessons and diving.

PUNTA GORDA: Located near the east end of Roatan. Taxi drivers can take you there. If you drive, watch for a side road down to the water on the north side of the island just before the main road reaches the community of Oak Ridge.
