A Salt Lake man convicted of carjacking was sentenced to life in prison Friday because his two prior convictions for robbery brought him under the federal "three-strikes" provision.

Thomas Ray Gurule, 54, received the mandatory life sentence Friday from U.S. District Judge Paul Cassell.

Gurule was convicted of a 2003 carjacking in which he wielded a knife and forced a 19-year-old Salt Lake County woman to drive him from Sandy to downtown Salt Lake City.
