Game in 'nearby' Tempe offers some interesting footnotes

A quick glance, from A-Z, of the 34th annual Fiesta Bowl featuring fifth-ranked Utah (11-0) and Pittsburgh (8-3), Jan. 1 (6:30 p.m., KTVX, Ch. 4) at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

A — as in Arizona. The close proximity and anticipated weather make it an attractive travel option for Utah fans, who weren't all that excited about another trip to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

B — as in block party. Smashmouth is the headline act for a New Year's Eve bash for fans in Tempe.

C — as in champions. The game pits winners of the Big East and Mountain West conferences.

D — as in Drinkwater's City Hall Steakhouse. The Scottsdale establishment will host an exclusive party for both teams.

E — as in East. It's the sideline Utah will occupy in the game.

F — as in first. Utah and Pittsburgh will be meeting for the first time.

G — as in grill. A steak fry will be served to both teams at their respective hotels on the eve of the Fiesta Bowl.

H — as in home. The Utes will wear their home red jerseys in the game.

I — as in Insight. The Phoenix area will be busy with the Insight Bowl, featuring Notre Dame and Oregon State, Dec. 28 at Bank One Ballpark.

J — as in Jennie. Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch (softball) is grand marshal of the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

K — as in keno. A casino in nearby Chandler is offering special deals for Fiesta Bowl fans. Several other activities, including an art walk in Scottsdale, are planned away from the football field throughout the week before the game.

L — as in loot. Team payout from the Bowl Championship Series is expected to be between $14 million and $17 million.

M — as in Musburger. Brent Musburger and Gary Danielson will broadcast the game on television.

N — as in national. The Fiesta Bowl will broadcast on ABC.

O — as in Ole'. Billed as college football's biggest party, fans can tailgate at the ASU Festival Grounds prior to the game.

P — as in Pinnacle High School in Phoenix. That's where Pittsburgh will practice all week.
