Enrollment at Western Governors University doubled this year to 3,000 students who are now taking advantage of WGU's online, competency-based programs.
WGU currently offers 24 different bachelor's and master's degree programs in business, information technology and education. This year the school moved into a 16,000-square-foot building, and there are plans to add another 10,000 square feet. WGU employs more than 50 faculty from 24 states.
"We are an extremely attractive option for working adults who have competencies but lack the academic credentials," said WGU President Robert W. Mendenhall.
WGU was founded and is supported by 19 governors. The school claims to be the only accredited university in the United States that offers online competency-based degree programs.
