OGDEN — It didn't take long for new Weber State head football coach Ron McBride to win over the hearts of Wildcat faithful.

Less than five minutes into his remarks at the press conference Wednesday afternoon, McBride flashed his old familiar grin and promised he would build the Wildcats into a winner.

"I love Ogden and bleed purple now," McBride said, triggering a standing ovation from those present.

Media, alumni, cheerleaders, student-athletes and fans all gathered for the announcement in Stewart Stadium's press box.

The official announcement was made by Weber State athletic director William J. Weidner, who said the 63-year-old coach had everything the program needed.

"His 40 years of experience is huge. With coach McBride on board, we won't be out-coached, we won't be out-prepared, we won't be out-conditioned," Weidner said. "We're going to have a football team that is ready to play and go 100 miles an hour under his leadership."

The search committee also liked McBride's capacity to recruit.

"His ability to recruit talented young men is well-documented," Weidner said. "With 21 years (recruiting) in the state of Utah, we feel he can hit the ground running. With Ron as our coach, we take the first step on our journey to contending for a Big Sky Championship."

The most significant aspect of McBride's rsum was his experience with the University of Utah, where he compiled an overall record of 88-63, the second most wins by a Utah coach.

"He's a proven winner," Weidner said. "He's been successful at all levels, worked with a lot of people in the business and so he brings a lot to the table. Hiring Ron McBride does add instant credibility to our program."

McBride said the deal has finalized last Sunday when Weber State officials came to Lexington, Ky., and spoke with him for about six hours. Following the meeting, he made immediate plans to come to Utah.

As for naming his coaching staff, McBride said he had commitments from four or five coaches, and he hoped to have that finalized by this weekend. He also planned to meet with the football team following the press conference. He knows there is a lot to be done if Weber State is going to start winning games. If he can get the wins coming, he can fill the seats at Stewart Stadium.
