Education: Bachelor's degree from St. John's Seminary College in Camarillo, Calif., 1958. Bachelor's degree in sacred theology from St. John's Theologate in Camarillo, 1962. Master's degree in social work from the National Catholic School of Social Service at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., 1964.

Experience: Ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1962. Worked in the Diocese of Fresno as a pastor and director of the diocese's Catholic Charities and Social Services before being appointed auxiliary bishop on Jan. 7, 1975. Appointed bishop of Stockton on Feb. 26, 1980. Appointed archbishop of Los Angeles on July 16, 1985. Elevated to cardinal by Pope John Paul II on June 28, 1991.
