Gov.-elect Jon Huntsman Jr. has appointed Tom Barberi to the team reviewing the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. According to recent news, Barberi has a mantra to "legalize adulthood in Utah."
The appointment says something that I believe many of us in Utah have known for some time: Alcohol consumption is an adult choice, a choice defined by law and one that should not be influenced by religious institutions. The fact that the Mormon Church does not wish its members to partake should never have been, nor continue to be, justification for the liquor laws in this state.
I find it ironic in a state so averse to "big" government, liquor establishments are so heavily regulated.
I support the new governor in his open-mindedness. Leave matters of faith to the faithful.
