The new state auditor general will not have to move very far.
The Legislative Management Committee, which includes most members of legislative leadership, approved John Schaff's appointment to fill the post Tuesday. He has served as the acting state auditor general since September.
Schaff's appointment will have to be accepted through a joint resolution by both chambers. The post is a six-year term and his annual salary will be $105,381.
Schaff has been deputy auditor general for 15 years. He will replace Wayne Walsh, who retired after 20 years in the position. A dozen people applied for the position, which requires the person to be either a certified public accountant or certified internal auditor.
The 25-member office conducts performance audits and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of state agencies, institutions, school districts, taxing districts, state colleges and universities.
