From all reports, the same was true around the nation. As Rush Valley went, so went America. Voter turnout hit or exceeded all previous highs.

"It's a historic election," said Jim Hall, the Rush Valley man who, along with Linda Langley, had the brainstorm to offer the free refreshments to voters.

"I just thought it would be nice to create a voter hospitality room where people could relax when it was all over in a completely bipartisan atmosphere," explained Jim, who, it so happens, is the local chairman of the Republican Party.

"I don't know how anybody voted," he said, "no one's talking politics. But the turnout has been great, for the vote and for the refreshments."

It's a dirty job, but somebody has to eat the doughnuts.
