Meyer keeps focus on Aztecs

As expected, Utah coach Urban Meyer was asked about two of his favorite topics in the Mountain West's weekly teleconference — the Bowl Championship Series and rumors he might replace the fired Ron Zook at Florida.

"It's an honor to be sixth in the country and that is significant. However, the insignificance of it is there's four games left, and it's our hardest four games of the season," said Meyer, who addressed the subject with his team Tuesday afternoon. "Basically the discussion was that it goes no further than this . . . December is when you can have open discussion, and it means something. It doesn't mean a thing now. Other than it's an honor to be there."

As for the job opening in Florida, Meyer insisted his focus in on Saturday's game at Qualcomm Stadium.

"There's no comment," he said. "This is about San Diego State."

Other coaches in the league, though, had plenty to say about Meyer and Utah's bid for the BCS.

"Urban would be a good fit anywhere. He's a good coach," said UNLV coach John Robinson, who considers this year's Utes the best team he has faced during his tenure with the Rebels.

"I think anybody in this conference who is insecure about Utah having a chance for a national championship — I don't mean being picked as but just being at that level of play — ought to be reassured that they have that chance," he added.

Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry is impressed with the momentum the Utes are building with 11 consecutive victories.

"Utah is certainly on a roll and capable," he explained.

Rocky Long of New Mexico acknowledges that Utah's final four opponents (San Diego State, Colorado State, Wyoming and BYU) have good enough athletes to defeat the Utes, but doesn't see that happening.

"I think they're the class of the league," said Long. "Unless they have a bad day or don't play very well, they're probably going to win the rest of them."

Meyer, however, isn't as certain. He's not convinced any team in the nation can make it through the season without a loss.

"I would be very surprised if any team finishes undefeated," said Meyer, who included Utah in the group. "College football is just too even nowadays."
