LOS ANGELESA change of scenery for the Utah Grizzlies merely produced a new low in a season already filled with frustration.
The Grizzlies conceded four power-play goals while taking a season-low 20 shots during a 5-0 rout by the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night in front of 10,074 at Staples Center, the home of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.
Utah failed to launch a shot on goal in the first 10 minutes a span that included a 5-on-3 power play lasting two minutes.
The Grizzlies failed to convert on any of their nine power-play chances during a game in which both teams combined for 87 minutes in penalties. Eight Grizzlies spent a total of 41 minutes in the penalty box.
But Manchester scored its first goal while defenseman Rick Berry was serving a double minor.
The Monarchs' Troy Milam fired a slap shot from the top of the slot that Utah's Matthew Spiller deflected past goalie David LeNeveu at 11:01 of the first period.
LeNeveu was making his first start since appearing against Cincinnati on Oct. 15.
Manchester then took control by scoring three goals in the second period. Yanick Lehoux began the barrage with his sixth goal of the season.
Lehoux stick-handled toward the left post, shifted from his backhand to his forehand and tucked the puck under LeNeveu's right skate with 2:13 gone in the period.
At 10:53, Brad Smyth scored as the Monarchs held a 5-on-3 advantage. Smyth, standing in the crease at the right post, punched Lehoux's pass from the left corner underneath LeNeveu.
Then at 17:30, Milam scored his second power-play goal on a slap shot from the right point.
Manchester ended the scoring one minute into the final period with another 5-on-3 goal. Dustin Brown skated unmolested toward the left post and fired a wrist shot between LeNeveu's legs.
LeNeveu made 30 saves while Manchester's Adam Hauser finished with 20 for the shutout.
The game was part of a promotion called Hockey Day In L.A., originally scheduled as a triple-header featuring the Kings, Monarchs and a local youth team. But the NHL lockout reduced the event to the AHL game.
