Events are today at Fort Douglas

The 142nd anniversary of the founding of Fort Douglas will be celebrated today with events from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and include a Civil War encampment by the 3rd California Volunteers Re-enactors and friends. The Utah Military Vehicle Club will have several vintage military vehicles on display, and self-guided tours of the historic Fort Douglas buildings are offered.

This year's theme is "Utah's Citizen Soldiers; Serving Community, State and Nation." This year is the Utah National Guard's 110th anniversary. A symposium will be held in the morning with presentations on such subjects as "Camp Williams," "An Illustrated History of the Utah National Guard," "Bombing Practice at Wendover," "Music of the Nauvoo Legion," "Utah Military History," "The Candy Bomber" and "Trouble on the Timpanogos."

Field guns will be demonstrated and antique arms exhibited at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

At 6 p.m., during a dinner, author and historian Will Bagley will give a keynote address titled "Ruminations on the Nauvoo Legion." Registration for the symposium is $5 from 8 a.m.-noon at Building 31, the Officers' Club. Cost for the prime rib dinner is $25. The dinner is a dress-up affair.
