14) Two universities are within the 1st District. Are there ways in which you, if elected, can help institutions, faculty, or students of higher education?

Actually, counting every satellite campus, there are three universities represented in the district. Regardless of that, last year, the House passed multiple pieces of legislation improving higher education as part of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Enhancements included strengthening teacher colleges through increased accountability, expanding loan forgiveness for math, science and special education teachers and reading specialists in high-poverty schools, and renewing graduate education programs. Then this year, HR4283, the College Access and Opportunity Act, has begun to make its way through the legislative process. This bill seeks to expand college access for low and middle income students through increased funding for student loans.

15) A ban on some types of assault weapons recently expired. Does the ban's expiration increase the threat of gun violence or deaths, or was it ineffective even when in place? Should there be a ban on certain types of guns or restrictions on gun ownership and possession?

Story continues below
The ban on so-called assault weapons was an empty and pointless political stunt that essentially banned ugly guns and left others just like them untouched. The ban did not reduce gun crime or violence and was entirely ineffective. The 2nd Amendment is a constitutional right of self-defense and should be preserved.

16) There is no federal term limit law for congressmen. Are you willing to say now that you will limit your own terms in the U.S. House? If so, how long before you not seek re-election?

Term limits is a legitimate concept when applied to all members of the body. To self-impose an automatic term limit when other states do not will do unnecessary harm to Utah seeking recognition in a body where seniority is still a key element to congressional success.

17) What, if anything, does your campaign funding say about your candidacy?
