Rob Bishop answers Deseret Morning News questionnaire
4) How much longer should U.S. troops be in Iraq? At this time, do you favor or oppose spending as much money as President Bush requests on the Iraqi war?
We will stay in Iraq until the ultimate goal is accomplished. U.S. action already clearly shows we are not in Iraq for long-term occupation. We will leave as soon as possible, but this final decision must be made by the military leaders on the ground, not politicians in Washington. Until then, I will support spending as much as is necessary to give our military the resources they need to fight this global war on terror.
5) Do you favor or oppose the United States remaining a member of the United Nations?
International cooperation, through organizations like the United Nations, is always helpful and a valuable goal. However, the U.S. must maintain the right to independent action. I will not allow America to give up that right.
That would be a temporary solution to a long-term concern. The long-term solution is to develop domestic sources of energy, including environmentally sound drilling for oil in ANWR and development of Utah resource potential. We will never become energy independent if we refuse to develop the resources our nation already possesses.
7) The United States is now running huge budget deficits. How would you deal with this problem? Do you favor or oppose making the Bush tax cuts permanent? If so, how do you reconcile giving more tax cuts as the deficit just grows larger?
Government deficits are always a financial problem. Our current deficit has become a smaller percentage of our GNP, which demonstrates a growing economy and illustrates our potential to reduce the deficit. The one true principle to remember is that raising taxes has never reduced a deficit.
