• Garden mums can be purchased in a wide variety of containers ranging from 4-inch pots to 2- and 3-gallon containers, hanging baskets and specialty planters. Select healthy plants with dark green leaves, no flower or leaf damage, strong stems and healthy white root balls.

• Garden mums make excellent container displays, but they do not overwinter well in pots. If you use them in containers, plant them in the ground or discard them after they flower.

• For more information on different mum types and growing tips, visit the National Chrysanthemum Society Web site at www.mums.org

• Mandy Self, director of Horticulture Education at Red Butte Garden, will present a workshop on "Fall Color in the Garden" on Oct. 21, noon-1:30 p.m. For more information, call 581-4747 or log on to www.redbuttegarden.org

• The English Garden at Library Square is hosting three workshops in October. Topics include "Spring Color" on Saturday, "Bonsai for Beginners" on Oct. 16 and "Beginning Houseplants" on Oct. 23. Classes begin at 11 a.m. For more information, call 364-6202.
