Council lauded for community service

"We must turn away from and resolutely reject the zero-sum game which too many play. A game which requires that if I win you must lose. What is needed are scenarios that ensure there are no losers, only winners, in major disputes between honorable and honest community members. We must seek for and cultivate the common ground which unites us, not the differences that divide us."

Unfortunately in today's politically correct world, Elder Morrison said, "too often civility has become reduced to an unwillingness to challenge others on the grounds that doing so might make them feel uncomfortable. Those who do so, supposedly because they want to be polite and wish to avoid conflict, unfortunately serve only to conceal the covert warfare which too often is waged beneath the surface, whispered and sniggered about behind closed doors."

He asked the audience to understand that in expressing that view, he recognized the proper place for politeness and decorum. "We must never try to wound others or to scoff at their beliefs. Neither is there any place, in a strong and caring community, for arrogant assumptions that only those who believe as I do have a monopoly on goodness, truth or wisdom."
