Rawlins, Fowles lift Delta by Lehi

LEHI — The Delta Rabbits jumped out to an early lead and never let up in Friday's game against a Lehi team that had about as much luck hunting rabbits as Elmer Fudd. The 41-13 win over Lehi (4-3) puts Delta (5-1) squarely in the driver's seat in Region 8.

Delta used a dominating running game and an attacking defense, aided by five Lehi turnovers, four of which they turned into touchdowns. Running back KC Rawlins bounced back from a sub-par game against Orem to lead Delta with 152 yards rushing, 102 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. Also impressive was Doug Fowles, son of Delta coach Dean Fowles.

In only his second start at quarterback in the senior's first season of football, Fowles did everything but dance with the drill team at halftime.

Fowles threw for two touchdowns, ran for another, deftly guided the Delta offense, ran an interception back 45 yards while playing safety, punted and fielded punts. Fowles, a scratch golfer who was on the Delta golf team instead of the football team up until this year, decided to suit up for his dad's final season.

"It's the greatest getting to play for him," Doug Fowles said. "He's been the coach 24 years and I've always gone to all of the games. I just knew I had to play for him this year."

Coach Fowles originally told his son to stick with golf, and it's likely after Friday he is happy his son didn't listen to him.

"Our kids came with intensity and we caught a few breaks early," Dean Fowles said. "We are not 41-13 better than this team — and I was nervous all the way up to the end."
