Provo's Argyle socks it to Dons
"Rob Argyle is the real deal," said Provo coach Clint Christiansen. "He got it done tonight.
"Our defense came and played a heckuva game. This is a really big win for our program it's huge as far as getting into November and making the playoffs."
Late in the first quarter, Provo senior Danny Bell angled a wobbly, low line drive of a punt out of bounds at the Spanish Fork 1-yard line. Two plays later, Argyle knifed through the line of scrimmage from his linebacker position to tackle Brady Shepherd in the end zone for a safety.
Following the ensuing free kick, sophomore quarterback Warner Jarman wasted no time in leading the Bulldogs down the field for another score. Jarman ran for 12 and 8 yards, respectively, on consecutive plays. He took a three-step drop and rifled the ball to Jake Cannon for a 13-yard completion and then hit Chad D'Haenens over the middle for a 23-yard gain down to the Dons' 1-yard line. Argyle plunged into the end zone over right tackle to make it 9-0.
Shepherd atoned for his earlier miscue by racing down the right sideline for a 35-yard gain on the first play of Spanish Fork's next possession. On a fourth-and-2, quarterback Griff Robles rolled to his left and, unable to locate an open receiver, plowed over a Provo defender for a first down at the Bulldogs' 14-yard line. The drive stalled shortly thereafter, and Ben Tuckett kicked a 31-yard field goal for the Dons.
Provo led at halftime, 9-3.
Midway through the third quarter, Argyle took a handoff between the tackles and fought and spun his way 17 yards to his second touchdown of the game and a 15-3 lead.
"The offensive line gave me a hole to work with," said Argyle. "And then I made a few moves to make it into the end zone."
Operating out of the shotgun, Robles willed Spanish Fork to an 83-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter with an assortment of quarterback keepers and medium-range passes. Robles ran in from 8 yards out with just over two minutes left in the game to make it 15-10.
The Dons, however, couldn't get the ball back; an onside kick failed, and Provo ran the clock out after sophomore Austin Alder ran for 6 yards on third-and-5.
