Mark Hacking makes initial court appearance.
AUGUST 14
New allegations suggest that Lori learned on July 16 that Mark had not applied to medical school after checking with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill about financial aid. Meanwhile, friends, neighbors and family gather at a memorial service held for Lori Hacking.
AUGUST 16
Mark Hacking appears in court, preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 23.
AUGUST 20
Thelma Soares, Lori Hacking's mother, announces the establishment of a scholarship in memory of her daughter for students attending the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business.
SEPTEMBER 14

Mark Hacking waives his preliminary hearing. Arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 29, when Hacking will be expected to enter a plea to the charges.
SEPTEMBER 27
Police say the search for the remains of Lori Hacking at the Salt Lake County landfill is placing them close to the area where Hacking's body might be. Newspapers with dates of July 15 to July 19 have been found.
OCTOBER 1
About 8:20 a.m., a volunteer at the Salt Lake County landfill finds human remains in an area where investigators have been looking for the body of Lori Hacking. The state medical examiner's office uses dental records to identify them as Lori Hacking's. The search has continued 33 days, and volunteers searched through 4,600 tons of garbage.
