What was your impression of the debate?

Comments were taken from people watching the debate in Salt Lake and Utah counties.

Emilie Johnson, Provo, philosophy professor at Utah Valley State College: "Certainly John Kerry won. I think President Bush was unable to offer specific solutions to what to do in Iraq right now. The level of uncertainty there has become such a problem. He has not admitted that there is a problem, and he has not given a solution for what he would do to correct the problem."

Shawn Young, Provo, graduate student: "I think John Kerry surprisingly looked very solid in the debate, and I was impressed with the way he articulated his answers."

Mike Dickey, Pleasant Grove: "I thought Bush won the debate. I think he represented what he believes in. I think he represented his party, and I think he stood firm on the principles he established early on in his presidency to fight the war on terror."

Jeremy Bowen, Seattle: "Bush just didn't have a strong position. He kept just going back to the issues that Kerry had already taken care of. I think Kerry was more capable and intelligent."

David Shepler, Salt Lake City: "I have the opinion that Kerry is doing better. I think he's talking clearer on the issues. The president was on the defensive."

Heidi Hubenthal, Layton: "I think the president stands strong. The way Kerry responded, he's improving the president's case."

Elvoid Nelson, Martinez, Calif.: "I think Kerry won. He seemed to have a better knowledge of the facts. The president was always on the defensive."

Les Titus, Holladay: "I was impressed with the president. I support him. I think he represented himself well. Kerry had to win the debate, and I don't think he did that."
