Salt Lake police and other volunteers searching the Salt Lake Valley Landfill for the remains of Lori Hacking said Monday they're encouraged by what they've found so far.

Volunteers have found certain landmarks they believe put them in the area where Hacking's body might be.

Today marks the beginning of week three of the hand search. Earlier this month, investigators decided to stop using cadaver dogs in the search for Hacking's body and go through an estimated 4,200 tons of garbage for a second time.

Since the hand search began, volunteers have found envelopes with addresses that are close to the area where Mark Hacking is believed to have disposed of Lori's body. Newspapers dated from July 15 to July 19 have also been found.

Salt Lake police detective Phil Eslinger has been volunteering in the landfill search and personally found some of those items.

"It gives you more hope to keep working," he said of finding the landmarks.

If Hacking's body is in the landfill, investigators believe they may at least be getting closer. So far, there has been no sign of Hacking.

Police believe Mark Hacking shot and killed his wife, Lori, on the morning of July 19 and put her body in a Dumpster near the University of Utah. He later allegedly confessed to his brothers what he had done.

Hacking remained Monday in the Salt Lake County Jail on $1 million bail. Last Thursday he waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His next scheduled court date is Oct. 29.

Eslinger said he has found envelopes from all over the county and some from out of state buried in the trash. The fact that volunteers now believe they're searching in the right part of the pile is encouraging, he said.

The search effort will continue every Tuesday through Friday. The forecast calls for possible rain this week, but Eslinger said they'll keep working. He said the trash may get a little heavier but at least the rain will keep the dust down.
